Education/Classes – Art

SCAD

Anyone with an affection for Savannah owes a great debt to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Founded in 1978 it had five trustees, four staff members, seven faculty members, and 71 students. In 2014, the university enrolled more than 11,000 students at multiple campuses in the US and throughout the world.

It would not be an understatement to say that SCAD saved Savannah from the all too common fate of demolition and nondescript development that has undertaken many small cities in the US. Working with the City of Savannah SCAD has saved – and occupies – a diverse collection of architectural sites throughout Savannah – more than 60 – from Romanesque Revival to Mid-Century Motels.

While SCAD doesn’t offer walk-in art classes, it does offer short term Summer Seminars, Workshops, and Pre-College Programs. These are excellent ways for young artists and designers and their parents to “sample” SCAD.

SCAD also offers a regular schedule of “SCAD Days” – weekend events that include facilities tours.
